Episodes:
Season One (1984 - 1985)
| Episode
1: The Murder
of Sherlock Holmes |
Settings:
Cabot Cove,
ME
New York, NY
New Holvang, NY |
Jessica
Beatrice Fletcher
is established
as a substitute
English teacher
with an interest
in mysteries.
Her nephew finds
a manuscript
of one such
novel she had
written as therapy
after her husband,
Frank, died.
The nephew brings
it to a New
York publisher
played by Arthur
Hill. It promptly
becomes a bestseller,
and it is soon
followed by
a second book.
When Jessica
visits New York
to publicize
the new mystery,
she finds the
city, the media,
and even the
people on the
streets abusive.
Jessica is even
mugged, and
after three
days in New
York City, she
is muttering
that she has
been "insulted,
browbeaten,
and patronized".
Hill, her publisher,
agrees. "Believe
me", he
says, "it
took years to
get used to
this town".
He invites for
her a weekend
in his country
home to meet
"real people".
That is where
the murder occurs;
Jessica finds
herself attracted
to this publisher
of hers and
then discover
that he himself
is the murderer.
