During the 1999 edition of the Italian Oscars for Television (Telegatto: www.telegatto.com) Show, Angela received a special prize for "Murder, She Wrote - La Signora in Giallo" as the best mystery series broadcasted in Italy.

The show, broadcasted by the main Italian private network (Canale 5, Channel 5), is one of the most important shows of its kind in Europe, with a share of more than 50%.

LE MOLTE VITE DI ANGELA. Sarebbe un grave errore parlare di Angela Lansbury solo come protagonista di un telefilm, per quanto di successo. Il suo curriculum infatti è dei più ricchi: nata a Londra, figlia di un' attrice irlandese e nipote di un leader laburista, arriva negli Usa nel ' 39, all' inizio della seconda guerra mondiale. Nel ' 44 interpreta il suo primo film, "Angoscia", accanto a Ingrid Bergman e Charles Boyer, un ruolo che le vale la nomination all' Oscar come attrice non protagonista. Ne ottiene una seconda nel ' 45 per "Il ritratto di Dorian Gray". E' l' inizio di una lunghissima carriera che passa per "Sansone e Dalila" (' 49), "La lunga estate calda" (' 58), accanto a Orson Welles e Paul Newman, "Il buio in cima alle scale" (' 60), "Va'  e uccidi" di John Frankenheimer.
Contemporaneamente al lavoro cinematografico, la Lansbury è costantemente impegnata in teatro, prima a Londra, dal ' 71 all' 82, e poi a New York, dove, in sedici anni, ottiene 4 Tony Awards per i musical e le commedie interpretati a Broadway. Sono innumerevoli infine i telefilm e i film Tv cui ha partecipato.

INTERVISTA
Avviso per gli appassionati della "Signora in giallo": dal 21 giugno Jessica Fletcher, la scrittrice e investigatrice residente a Cabot Cove, villaggio da cartolina sulle coste del Maine, Stati Uniti, torna su Raiuno per tutta l' estate. Da ben 12 anni il pubblico italiano segue fedelmente le pacate e acute indagini di questa brillante Miss Marple americana, apparsa per la prima volta sulla televisione statunitense il 30 settembre 1984. Il tutto per 12 anni ininterrotti di programmazione, 264 episodi, infinite nomination e premi, ultimo in ordine di tempo il Telegatto 1999 per "serie Tv cult". Tutto il merito del successo di Jessica Fletcher è di Angela Lansbury, l' attrice anglo-americana arrivata a questa serie per sbaglio: "Il telefilm era destinato a una mia amica che si ammalò, dovette rinunciare e io la sostituii. Pensai che l' avrei fatto per un paio d' anni. Invece ho continuato per dodici. Oggi che io e la mia famiglia ne siamo i produttori, ne facciamo ancora un paio di episodi l' anno, di due ore ciascuno. L' ultimo, che abbiamo appena terminato, mi vede in un doppio ruolo, quello di Jessica e di una sua antenata".
Una curiosità. Jessica Fletcher è una donna che, pur essendo piuttosto avanti con gli anni, non sta ferma un momento: lavora ininterrottamente, cammina a lungo, va in bicicletta e viaggia moltissimo. Le assomiglia in questo? "Direi di sì: anche la mia vita è molto dinamica. Ci tengo a proporre un modello positivo per le donne della mia età. Voglio sottolineare quanto è importante restare attivi e produttivi".
Lei ha avuto una carriera eclettica e ricchissima: non le dà un po' fastidio essere spesso scambiata dagli ammiratori per Jessica Fletcher? "Niente affatto. In realtà, io ho tre tipi di pubblico: oltre a quello televisivo, che per l' appunto mi identifica soprattutto con la Fletcher, c' è quello cinematografico, ovviamente il più anziano, dato che ricorda i miei primi film, e quello teatrale".
Ma una vita professionale tanto intensa non l' ha costretta a sacrificare la sua vita privata? "No, perché ho speso la maggior parte delle mie energie nel cercare di conciliare lavoro e famiglia.  Mi è sempre piaciuto enormemente fare la moglie: tenere la casa e il giardino, cucinare per i miei".
Da cinquant' anni lei è sposata con Peter Shaw che, dopo essere stato agente di Hollywood e dirigente della Mgm, dal ' 73 è manager suo e della casa di produzione dove lavora tutta la famiglia. Qual è il segreto di un matrimonio tanto longevo? "Abbiamo avuto la fortuna di avere gli stessi interessi. Siamo sempre stati buoni soci, in amore e in affari".
La vostra società di produzione è molto attiva: oltre al nuovo episodio della "Signora in giallo", quest' anno ha confezionato anche un film per la Tv, "The Unexpected Mrs Polifax", trasmesso dalla Cbs, in cui lei è una vedova attempata che, per risollevarsi da un momento di depressione, decide di realizzare un sogno giovanile, diventare una spia della Cia: come nasce questo lavoro? "E' un personaggio creato dalla scrittrice Dorothy Gillman, fisicamente assai diverso dalla Fletcher. Mi sono divertita molto a interpretarla".
Altri progetti? Qui la compassata signora Lansbury scoppia in una franca risata: "Ebbene sì. Mi direte che sono pazza ma, alla mia età, ho deciso di fare ancora un musical a Broadway. E' basato sulla commedia "La visita della vecchia signora" di Dürrenmatt, un lavoro interessantissimo e molto commovente". Che dire? Complimenti, signora Lansbury.

THE MANY LIVES OF ANGELA. It should be a big error saying that Angela is only the main character of a series, even if it's had a great success. Her curriculum is a valuable one: born in London, daughter of an Irish actress and granddaughter of a leader of the Labour Party, comes to the States in 1939, at the beginning of World War II. In 1944 she acts in her first movie, "Angoscia" (Gaslight), with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, a role that brings her a nomination for an Oscar as best supporting actress. She gets another nomination in 1945 for "Il Ritratto di Dorian Gray" (The Picture of Dorian Gray). It's the beginning of a long-time career, which sees movies as "Sansone e Dalila" (Samson and Delilah, 1949), "La Lunga Estate Calda" (The Long Hot Summer, 1958) with Orson Welles and Paul Newman, "Il Buio in Cima alle Scale" (The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, 1960), "Va' e Uccidi" (The Manchurian Candidate) by John Frankenheimer.
During her movie-engagements, Lansbury works in theatres, first in London, from 1971 to 1982, then in New York, where, in sixteen years, she's got 4 Tony Awards for Broadway musicals and plays. She's acted in numerous series and tv-movies too.

INTERVIEW
A notice for all the fans of "La Signora in Giallo" (Murder, She Wrote): from the 21st of June Jessica Fletcher, the detective-writer from Cabot Cove, a small village on the Atlantic shore in the State of Maine, comes back on Raiuno (the first Italian public broadcasting network) for the next summer. For 12 years the Italian tv-viewers have watched the investigations of this brilliant American version of Miss Marple, first appeared on the US tv on September 30, 1984. All went on for 12 years, 264 episodes, numerous nominations and awards won, last but not least the "Telegatto" 1999 in the category "serie tv cult" (cult tv-series). The credit of the success of Jessica Fletcher goes to Angela Lansbury, the British actress who became Mrs. Fletcher by chance: "The series was written for a friend of mine who was taken ill, that compelled her to renounce and I replaced her. I thought I'd be Jessica for a couple of years. On the contrary they was 12. Today my family and I are the producers: we make a couple of two-hour-episodes per year. On the latest one Angela Lansbury's got "two roles": Jessica and an ancestor of her".
A curiosity. Jessica Fletcher is a woman that, even if she's not so young, works continually, loves walking, cicling and travelling. Do you look like her in your real life? "Yes, I do: my life's very active. I like showing a positive model for women like me. I wanna lay stress of how much important is to stay active and fruitful".
You've had an eclectic and very valuable career: do you get bored when fans identify you as Jessica Fletcher? "No, I don't. I have three kinds of public: the tv one, who identifies me as Mrs. Fletcher, the movie one, the older one, who remembers my earlier movies, and the theatre one".
And does a so intense professional life force you to sacrifice your private life? "No, because I tried to use my energy to conciliate job and family. I've ever loved being a wife: taking care of my home and my garden, cooking for my family".
For 50 years you've been married with Peter Shaw, who, after a career as a Hollywood agent and a manager at MGM, since 1973 he's the manager of your family production company. Which is the secret of a so long-lived marriage? "We had the same own interests. We've been very good friends, in love and business".
Your production company is very active: you produced the new two-hour episode of Murder, She Wrote, the tv-movie "The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax", broadcasted by the CBS, where you're a widow who becomes an agent for the CIA: what about this movie? "She's a character made by Dorothy Gillman, fisically different from Mrs. Fletcher. It was funny for me to act as Mrs. Pollifax".
Other projects? After this question, Mrs. Lansbury begins to laugh: "Well... yes. Maybe you'll think I'm crazy, but I decided to make a new Broadway musical... at my age! It's based on a work by Duerrenmatt; very interesting and touching".
